BR Class 22 is a diesel-hydraulic locomotive that was introduced by British Railways in 1959. It was built by the German company Vossloh-Schwabe and was used primarily for shunting and light freight operations. The locomotive featured a 950 horsepower Maybach MD650 engine and Voith L217U hydraulic transmission. In total, 55 Class 22 locomotives were built, and they were initially deployed in the Western Region of British Railways. However, they quickly gained a reputation for being unreliable and were gradually replaced by more reliable diesel-electric locomotives. The last Class 22 was withdrawn from service in 1971. Today, only one Class 22 locomotive survives and is preserved at the Swindon and Cricklade Railway.
